Kathmandu: Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia is ready to support Iran’s peaceful nuclear development, while also addressing Israel’s national security concerns, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking about the recent conflict between Israel and Iran, Putin revealed that Russia has held in-depth discussions with both Israeli and US officials, and has also submitted proposals to Iranian counterparts aimed at de-escalating the situation. “It is possible to satisfy Iran’s interest in peaceful nuclear energy and simultaneously address Israel’s security concerns,” Putin said, pointing toward a diplomatic solution to the ongoing nuclear standoff.
Putin emphasized that the final resolution of the issue would depend on the political leadership of the concerned nations but highlighted that Russia’s long-standing trust-based relationship with Iran could serve as a foundation for peaceful cooperation, particularly in nuclear applications related to agriculture and medicine.
Citing Russia’s past involvement in Iran’s civilian nuclear program, he referenced the Bushehr nuclear power plant, originally designed by German firms but later completed by Russian nuclear agency Rosatom. Putin noted the successful adaptation of the plant’s design to Russian standards and confirmed ongoing work on two additional reactor units, with over 200 Russian specialists currently deployed at the site.
Putin also disclosed that Russia has coordinated with Israeli authorities to ensure the security of the construction efforts at Bushehr, underlining Moscow’s commitment to reducing regional tensions.
The remarks come at a critical time, as Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on June 13, targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, prompting a retaliatory response from Iran. The exchange of fire has led to casualties on both sides, with fears of wider regional escalation.
Putin’s proposal is being seen as a significant diplomatic gesture aimed at finding common ground between Iran’s nuclear ambitions and Israel’s existential concerns, possibly opening the door for future negotiations and de-escalation in the region.
