Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called for updates on the government’s efforts to reclaim misappropriated land belonging to Tribhuvan University (TU).
During a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office today, PM Karki discussed the issue with TU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deepak Aryal, Rector Prof. Khadga KC, and Registrar Prof. Kedar Prasad Rijal, in the presence of Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Education Minister Mahabir Pun, and Communications and Information Minister Jagadish Kharel.
Also present were Chief Secretary Eaknarayan Aryal and members of the Land Inquiry Committee, which has been investigating irregularities in TU’s land holdings.
During the discussion, PM Karki sought a detailed briefing on the committee’s progress. TU officials highlighted the challenges they face in evicting illegal occupants and requested stronger government backing to recover and properly document the university’s encroached properties.
Home Minister Aryal urged TU to take proactive steps to register and verify its land records, advising that separate complaints be lodged with the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and other relevant agencies if cases of land forgery are identified. He noted that the CIB possesses the necessary expertise to investigate such matters.
Chief Secretary Aryal remarked that about 60 percent of the committee’s recommendations could be implemented directly by TU and the committee itself, emphasizing the need for institutional initiative rather than full reliance on government intervention.
Education Minister Pun cautioned against delays and proposed forming a multi-agency taskforce to coordinate and expedite the land recovery process.
Concluding the meeting, Prime Minister Karki instructed immediate intervention in cases where individuals or organizations are found to have illegally occupied, encroached upon, or sold TU land, and directed that those involved be brought to justice without delay.
