Kathmandu: The Kathmandu District Court has granted police permission to detain CPN-UML Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, along with former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, for five days for investigation.

According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, the court approved a five-day remand despite police requesting 10 days for further inquiry.

Both leaders were arrested on Saturday morning and presented before the court the same day for remand extension.

Following their arrest, UML cadres across the country have been placed on high alert, demanding Oli’s immediate release. Clashes between protesters and police have also been reported in several areas.

The arrests were made based on the findings of a commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, formed to investigate the casualties during the ‘Gen-G’ movement on Bhadra 23 and 24.

The commission concluded that the deaths of protesters were due to negligence and lack of due care by then Prime Minister Oli, Home Minister Lekhak, and then Inspector General of Police Chandrakuber Khapung. It recommended further investigation and prosecution against those involved.
