Washington: According to a U.S. official, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may be planning to travel to Russia soon to meet with President Vladimir Putin. The meeting is believed to be related to Russia's efforts to acquire military equipment for its ongoing war in Ukraine.

The official, who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, stated that the U.S. anticipates Kim's visit to Russia within the month. Although the exact location and date of the meeting are not confirmed, the Pacific port city of Vladivostok is considered a likely possibility due to its relative proximity to North Korea.

Adrienne Watson, spokeswoman for the National Security Council, revealed that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently visited Pyongyang to explore the possibility of North Korea selling artillery ammunition to Russia. Watson indicated that there is information suggesting Kim Jong Un expects further discussions, including high-level diplomatic engagement in Russia.

The U.S. has expressed concerns and urged North Korea to halt its arms negotiations with Russia, emphasizing that Pyongyang had publicly committed not to provide or sell arms to Russia.

Shoigu announced on Monday that the two countries may conduct joint war games. The New York Times initially reported Kim's plans to meet with Putin in Russia this month. Last week, the White House mentioned that intelligence indicated exchanges of letters between Putin and Kim following Shoigu's visit, suggesting ongoing talks between Russia and North Korea regarding a potential weapons sale.
