SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain: France's Finance Minister, Bruno Le Maire, has called on the European Union (EU) to assert its strength and not yield to any country, following a trade dispute with China. This comes after the EU initiated an investigation into Beijing's electric car subsidies, which drew warnings from China about potential harm to bilateral ties.

Le Maire, speaking to Bloomberg TV, emphasized that the EU represents a "powerful" continent and should not be intimidated by any nation. He stressed that the EU is home to one of the world's most robust economies and a single market, which should enable it to defend its interests effectively.

The EU's investigation could lead to the imposition of punitive tariffs on cars it deems to be unfairly priced, potentially undercutting European competitors. China responded by accusing the EU of engaging in "naked protectionist behavior" and warned of negative consequences for China-EU economic and trade relations.

Le Maire rebuffed these claims, asserting that the EU's actions had nothing to do with protectionism. He further noted that French CEOs had expressed concerns about potential fallout from the investigation, but he remained steadfast in his support for a strong and united Europe.

France, while advocating for the probe, acknowledged that Chinese markets are vital for French luxury brands like LVMH, Kering, and Hermes. The situation underscores the ongoing trade tensions between the EU and China and the EU's determination to protect its economic interests.
