Former Finance Minister Dr. Mahat Asserts Efforts to Revitalize Economy, Clarifies on Economic Indicators

Patan (Lalitpur): Former Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat reiterated his tireless efforts to rejuvenate the economy during his tenure, emphasizing his commitment to restoring normalcy in economic indicators.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Nepali Congress Party Central Office in Lalitpur today, Dr. Mahat, who also serves as the spokesperson for the party, clarified that despite challenges, the economic indicators were not negative and he dedicatedly worked towards their improvement.

Highlighting the economic challenges prevalent when he assumed the role of Finance Minister, Dr. Mahat underscored the concerted efforts undertaken to normalize the economy. He referenced statistics from Nepal Rastra Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank, which corroborated the positive trajectory of economic recovery.

Dr. Mahat pointed out a significant reduction in the inflation rate, from 8.5 percent to five percent during his tenure, along with a decline in bank interest rates owing to a more liberal monetary policy aimed at resolving economic issues.

Emphasizing the satisfactory increase in revenue collection by 10 percent compared to the previous fiscal year, the former Finance Minister attributed this progress to prudent governance practices and fiscal discipline observed during his tenure.

Moreover, Dr. Mahat highlighted efforts to attract foreign investment, citing the upcoming investment summit scheduled for April, where numerous investors have shown interest in participating. He reiterated his commitment to facilitating foreign investment inflows to bolster the country's economic growth.

Addressing the political landscape, Dr. Mahat clarified that Nepali Congress staunchly supported the ruling alliance, as affirmed by the party's Mahasamiti meeting decision. He reaffirmed the party's commitment to maintaining continuity within the alliance, reflecting the party's cohesive stance in navigating political dynamics.
