Kathmandu: Breaking the political impasse, ruling parties and the main opposition Nepali Congress have agreed to establish a parliamentary committee aimed at resolving ongoing issues.
The Nepali Congress (NC) had long advocated for the creation of a parliamentary committee to investigate alleged irregularities within cooperatives. Following discussions held at the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday, a consensus was reached to form the committee, confirmed NC's chief whip Ramesh Lekhak.
Lekhak announced that the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the committee would be finalized on Sunday morning, indicating unanimous support from all political factions for its formation. Describing the decision as a significant achievement, he highlighted the positive trajectory it sets for addressing pertinent issues.
Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Padam Giri, will oversee the drafting of the committee's ToR, with input from leaders representing various political parties. Lekhak expressed optimism that the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting scheduled for Sunday would proceed following the decision to establish the parliamentary committee.
Saturday saw a flurry of discussions and meetings among political leaders to pave the way for the committee's formation. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' held talks with NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, General Secretary Gagan Thapa, Chief Whip Lekhak, and other leaders after consulting with the Speaker.
NC General Secretary Biswo Prakash Sharma underscored that the parliamentary deadlock should not be misconstrued as a political crisis. Speaking at the launch of 'Aaranko Aago,' a collection of short fictions authored by Kashyap Prasad Poude, Sharma emphasized the urgency of addressing the country's economic challenges through broad-based unity among political parties.
Sharma dismissed notions of a political crisis, citing the absence of violent conflicts and advocating for a concerted effort towards economic and social transformation. He stressed the importance of preserving indigenous and traditional practices, a theme reflected in Poude's collection of short fictions, which aims to depict social realities and promote cultural preservation.
