Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday sought information regarding the glacial lake outburst and subsequent flash flood in the Thame River of Solukhumbu district. The incident occurred on August 16, causing significant damage in the area.

PM Oli received preliminary details about the disaster from Defense Minister Manbir Rai, local representatives, and senior officials from relevant agencies. The briefing took place at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar, after Minister Rai and his team conducted an aerial inspection of Thame village in Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5.

Following the briefing, PM Oli assured that the federal government would take immediate action to respond to the disaster in Thame. The team, which included parliamentarian Sonam Geljen Sherpa, Chief Secretary Leela Devi Gadtaula, Anil Pokharel, Chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, and local leaders, highlighted the urgent need for relief distribution, compensation for flood victims, and the restoration of essential services such as electricity and communication.

The report presented to the Prime Minister also called for a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the flash flood and an evaluation of the risks posed by other glacial lakes in the area to develop a comprehensive reconstruction plan.

The flash flood damaged over 17 houses and a school, but fortunately, there were no human fatalities thanks to the implementation of an early warning system. However, some residents sustained injuries during the disaster.
