Kathmandu: A total of 135 climbers successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on Sunday, as weather conditions became favorable, the Department of Tourism reported. This marks one of the largest single-day ascents of the current spring climbing season.
According to the department's field office at Everest Base Camp, ideal weather opened a clear window for climbers to push for the summit. More ascents are expected Monday, as climbers take advantage of the ongoing favorable conditions.
Department Director Himal Gautam said May 18 had been planned as a “maximum summit” day, contributing to the high number of climbers reaching the peak. “Although climbing was slow in the early days of the season, the past few days have seen the most ascents,” Gautam added.
So far this spring, over 200 climbers have summited Everest, with more expected to reach the peak in the coming days.
