Solukhumbu: The Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla, known as the gateway to Mount Everest, experienced an unprecedented surge in air traffic on Thursday, with a record 184 flights conducted by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) in Lukla, 152 of these flights were by helicopters and 23 by airplanes. Improved weather conditions contributed to the spike in flights, said Umesh Panthi, head of the Lukla CAAN office.

Tara Air and Summit Air operated 12 flights each, while Sita Air carried out eight. This marked one of the busiest days at the airport, which serves as a critical hub for trekkers and climbers heading to the Everest region.

A total of 532 tourists arrived in Lukla, including 396 foreigners and 136 Nepali nationals. Meanwhile, 462 tourists departed the region, indicating a robust flow of visitors.

"The increasing number of tourists to the Everest region is a positive sign," remarked Lamakaji Sherpa, president of the Everest Pollution Control Committee, highlighting the area's growing appeal as a prime trekking destination.

The record number of flights underscores the importance of Lukla Airport in Nepal's tourism industry, serving as a vital link for adventure seekers drawn to the iconic Everest region.
