New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi was sworn in as Delhi's Chief Minister on Saturday at Raj Niwas, becoming the third woman to hold the position in the capital. Other prominent AAP leaders, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain, and Mukesh Ahlawat, also took the oath as part of her new cabinet.
At 43, Atishi follows in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit as one of Delhi's few women chief ministers. A key figure in AAP, she gained recognition for her efforts to reform Delhi's education system while serving as an advisor to the former Education Minister, Manish Sisodia.
During her address, Atishi expressed both joy and sadness over the transition in leadership. She thanked outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal for placing his trust in her, vowing to work hard to ensure his return as Chief Minister after the upcoming assembly elections.
"First of all, I would like to thank Arvind Kejriwal, my guru and the popular CM of Delhi, for giving me this huge responsibility. Only in AAP, under his leadership, could someone like me, from an ordinary family, become the CM," she said.
Atishi, who currently represents the Kalkaji constituency, holds the most portfolios in the Delhi government and joined the cabinet in March 2023. With assembly polls approaching, she is now set to lead AAP's efforts to maintain its political foothold.
Other ministers echoed similar sentiments. AAP MLA Mukesh Ahlawat and minister Kailash Gahlot emphasized their commitment to continue working for Delhi's citizens under Kejriwal’s guidance.
Atishi’s parents, Tripta Wahi and Vijay Singh, were present at the swearing-in ceremony, marking a significant moment for the newly-appointed Chief Minister as she takes on this leadership role.
