Kaski: The District Court in Kaski has extended Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane's custody by an additional 10 days, allowing authorities to continue investigating his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of funds related to financial cooperatives. Lamichhane, a prominent political figure in Nepal, was first taken into custody on October 18 due to accusations concerning the misuse of funds managed by several cooperative ventures.
The decision for this extension, the third in his case, was made by a bench led by Judge Chandrakanta Paudel. The court initially granted two prior extensions, with the latest period beginning on October 31. Lamichhane’s most recent custody term ended on October 30; however, due to Tihar festival holidays, he was presented before the court on the following Tuesday. The court, considering the need for a thorough investigation, approved the additional 10-day period as requested by the investigating team.
Suraj Adhikari, the court’s information officer, confirmed that Lamichhane was initially brought before the court on October 20. Since then, his time in custody has been repeatedly extended as investigators seek further evidence to support the claims of fund misappropriation. The case has attracted significant public and media attention, given Lamichhane’s high-profile status and his role as a reform-oriented politician.
The allegations of cooperative fund misuse represent a major setback for Lamichhane, whose political platform largely focuses on anti-corruption and governance reform. The Rastriya Swatantra Party, under his leadership, has previously positioned itself as a movement committed to accountability and transparency within Nepal's political system. The accusations against Lamichhane have raised questions and concerns among his supporters and the general public regarding the authenticity of his commitment to these principles.
As the investigation continues, Lamichhane’s legal team has yet to provide a detailed defense against the charges. This extended period in custody will likely allow investigators more time to gather evidence, although the leader’s supporters have questioned the repeated extensions, citing potential political motivations behind the proceedings. The case, unfolding under intense public scrutiny, is expected to be pivotal in shaping public perceptions of both Lamichhane’s political career and the broader accountability landscape in Nepal.
