Kathmandu: Western Nepal has experienced seven aftershocks since December 16, the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre reported. The region has been witnessing frequent seismic activity following a major earthquake earlier this year.

The most recent tremor, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, occurred near Lali, Kalikot, at 11:37 PM on Friday, December 27. Earlier, on December 17 and 18, two aftershocks with magnitudes of 4.3 and 4.1 respectively, were recorded with epicenters in Dhamena, Bajhang.

On December 19, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Nesyang, Manang, while a significant quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit Bajura on December 21. On December 24, a 4.0-magnitude tremor was recorded near Api Mountain in Darchula. Another tremor, measuring 4.2, was reported in Naikwada, Jajarkot, on December 26.

These aftershocks follow a major earthquake of magnitude 6.4 that struck Ramidanda in Jajarkot on November 1, 2080 BS. Experts note that five of the aftershocks are directly related to the Jajarkot earthquake, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and preparedness in the region.

Western Nepal, situated along the active Himalayan seismic zone, remains prone to earthquakes, making it essential for authorities and residents to stay vigilant against potential risks.
