Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has implemented alternative arrangements to provide electricity for the construction of critical infrastructure along the Kathmandu-Tarai-Madhes Fast Track. The initiative is focused on ensuring the uninterrupted construction of roads, bridges, tunnels, and other structures in the Mandu Maltabesi area of Bhimphedi Rural Municipality-8 and the Sisneri Kogate area of Indrasarobar Rural Municipality-3, both in Makawanpur.
The fast-track construction requires approximately 12 MW of electricity, divided across four construction packages. To meet this demand, the NEA is taking steps to maintain a steady power supply without affecting local residents.
Key Alternative Arrangements:
-Upgrade of Dhorsing Substation:
The NEA plans to operate the Kulekhani First Hydropower Station at an 11 kV voltage level to supply electricity from Dhorsing to Mandu.
-Installation of High-Capacity Transformers:
A 22.5 MVA power transformer is being relocated to Dhorsing Substation to meet the fast track's electricity requirements. This measure addresses the limitations of the existing 5 MVA transformer, which is already running at full capacity to supply local demand.
-Addressing Flood-Induced Power Disruptions:
The 22 MW Bagmatikhola Small Hydropower Project, a critical source of electricity for the area, has been non-operational since September due to floods and landslides that damaged its switchyard and equipment, including a power transformer. NEA is working to repair and restore the project’s transmission lines, which connect to the Dhorsing Substation via 66 kV and 33 kV lines.
These measures are intended to ensure that construction activities on the fast track remain on schedule, overcoming challenges posed by infrastructure damage and high electricity demand. The Kathmandu-Tarai-Madhes Fast Track is a priority national project aimed at connecting Kathmandu with the southern plains and facilitating economic growth.
