Kathmandu: President Ramchandra Paudel has emphasized that festivals like Sonam Lhosar play a vital role in strengthening Nepal’s national unity by fostering mutual goodwill, tolerance, and fraternity among its diverse communities.
Extending his best wishes on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar, the New Year festival of the Tamang community, President Paudel expressed hope that the celebration would inspire all Nepalis to work toward an economically and socially prosperous nation. Observed on Magh Shukla Pratipada as per the lunar calendar, Sonam Lhosar is marked by worship of clan deities, nature rituals, and remembrance of Buddha’s teachings, alongside festive gatherings and cultural celebrations.
Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav also conveyed his best wishes, underscoring the importance of preserving Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. He highlighted that the festival serves as a reminder of the responsibility to protect indigenous traditions and pass them on to future generations. Traditional dances, music, and special festive dishes, he noted, contribute to preserving Nepal’s diverse cultural identity.
While Sonam Lhosar is primarily celebrated by the Tamang community, other ethnic groups, including the Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha, also observe the festival in their own ways, further enriching Nepal’s multicultural fabric.
