Janaki (Banke): A recent bird census has recorded 32 species of migratory aquatic birds in Banke district this winter. The survey, conducted along the Rapti River at Kusum of Raptisonari Rural Municipality-1, identified a diverse range of migratory birds visiting the region.

According to bird conservationist Ashish Chaudhary, the survey found 20 species of winter visitor water birds in Kanti Lake, while a total of 32 species were recorded across the district. The birds were observed in areas including Sikta, Kusum, and various lakes and rivers of Banke.

Chaudhary emphasized that the number of migratory birds could increase further if wetland conservation efforts and infrastructure management for water bird habitats were improved.

Ornithologist Ram Shahi noted that Ruddy Shelducks, Siberian birds, and migratory species from Russia were recorded in the census. However, he warned that the accumulation of garbage in ponds and lakes is shrinking aquatic bird habitats. He also pointed out that noise pollution from nearby picnic spots is posing a risk to the birds' natural environment.

The census also identified aquatic birds such as the Gadwall and Lesser Whistling Duck. The survey, conducted jointly by Banke National Park and the Buffer Zone community, recorded a total of 276 birds in the district.

Mandeep Pangeni, Information Officer at Banke National Park, shared that a team led by Ornithologist Joshi carried out the two-day survey. They found various bird species in the Rapti River area, local forests, and Kanti and Sutaiya ponds, and noted that their habitats remain relatively safe.

Pangeni expressed optimism that annual bird surveys would contribute to better habitat management for the migratory species.
