Khajura (Banke): Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa stated that the current coalition government is focused on effectively implementing the constitution. Speaking at a Lumbini Province-level interaction program titled "Constitution Amendment: Need and Challenge," Thapa emphasized that the NC-CPN (UML) coalition is committed to empowering people by ensuring constitutional provisions are properly enforced.
He acknowledged that challenges have emerged due to certain policies and legal frameworks following the constitution’s promulgation. However, he assured that necessary amendments would be made through consensus and cooperation to address these issues. Thapa particularly highlighted the importance of broader discussions on electoral reforms, federalism, and the authority of provincial governments in any future amendments.
"The need of the hour is to align laws with the constitution. Some laws need to be introduced swiftly, while others must be repealed or revised to maintain consistency with our constitutional framework. These adjustments will be made through collective agreement," Thapa stated.
He further emphasized the Nepali Congress’s leadership role in constitutional amendments, recalling that the party played a pivotal role in drafting and implementing the constitution after concluding Nepal’s peace process. Moving forward, he pledged that the NC would work inclusively with all political parties to ensure necessary modifications reflect the nation's evolving needs.
The event was presided over by Dr. Dila Sangraula, NC central member and coordinator of the Department of Professionals and Intellectuals. On the occasion, constitutional expert Kashiraj Dahal also shared insights, noting that public feedback suggests a need to review the electoral system, inclusion policies, and the structure of provincial governance to strengthen Nepal’s democratic framework.
