Kathmandu: Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe has said that a strong and united political party is essential for an effective Parliament, stressing that the strength of the legislature begins with the strength of political organizations.
Addressing a meeting of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party on Monday, Angdembe said that meaningful and effective voices in Parliament emerge only when lawmakers are empowered within their own party. He expressed confidence that a healthy internal environment would enhance the energy, confidence and wisdom of party lawmakers.
Congress Pledges Stronger Opposition
Angdembe said the Nepali Congress has been fulfilling its responsibility as the main opposition party and vowed to hold the government more effectively accountable in the days ahead.
While acknowledging that the opposition has been active, he emphasized the need to further strengthen its role in safeguarding democratic accountability and protecting the public interest.
Calls Journalists Parliament's 'Third Eye'
Highlighting the importance of the media, Angdembe described journalists covering parliamentary affairs as the "third eye" of Parliament.
He said reporters often identify issues that lawmakers may overlook, adding that their observations, criticism and analysis play a vital role in improving parliamentary practice and strengthening democratic oversight.
Expresses Concern Over Parliamentary Committees
Angdembe stressed that parliamentary committees are the primary forums for detailed discussions, scrutiny and decision-making. However, he expressed concern that there have been attempts in some instances to weaken their effectiveness.
He urged all political parties to work together to preserve the dignity of parliamentary committees while enhancing the overall effectiveness of Parliament.
National Interest Should Remain the Priority
He said the opposition should always rise above partisan interests and place the country's welfare at the center of its work. According to Angdembe, history will ultimately evaluate the political conduct of today's leaders, making it essential to prioritize national interest over political rivalry.
Speaker Must Remain Neutral
Commenting on the role of the Speaker, Angdembe said the Speaker represents the entire House rather than any individual political party and therefore must perform the role with fairness, neutrality and balance.
Calls for Institutional Communication
Angdembe also emphasized the need for party leaders and lawmakers to present the Nepali Congress's official position through institutional channels, including the Parliamentary Party leadership, Chief Whip and Whips, rather than expressing personal views that could create confusion.
He said developing such a culture would strengthen party discipline and ensure greater consistency in communicating the party's policies and positions.
