Kathmandu: On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day (May 3), President Ram Chandra Poudel extended a message emphasizing the critical role of the media in strengthening Nepal’s democracy and ensuring transparency in governance. He expressed confidence that Nepal’s media sector would continue to utilize and protect the constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom of the press and expression.

In his address, President Poudel highlighted the significant contribution of the Nepali press in dismantling autocratic rule and establishing a federal democratic republic. He noted that free and impartial journalism is a cornerstone of democracy and that a strong, independent press is essential not just for the media itself, but also for enabling citizens’ right to be informed.

“The more neutral, independent, and strong the press is, the stronger the democratic system becomes,” he stated, adding that the Nepali Constitution guarantees full press freedom, which includes the right to collect and disseminate information freely.

He stressed that the press must act as a watchdog against misinformation and disinformation, particularly in the era of rampant social media use, where false and misleading information can easily mislead the public. President Poudel called on the media to uphold truth, facts, and credibility and to serve as a platform for diverse voices across all classes and communities.

Recalling the sacrifices made to establish the republic, he stated, “Our long political struggle has been completed, and the country is now moving toward prosperity through economic transformation.” He expressed hope that the media would focus on this national need and help guide the public discourse.

Finally, President Poudel extended his best wishes to all three organs of the state, encouraging them to carry out their responsibilities with vigilance and to assist the media in delivering truthful and reliable information to citizens.
