Kathmandu: The Palestinian Ministry of Education has reported a staggering toll on the education sector amid the ongoing Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, stating that 16,382 students have been killed and 25,959 injured since the conflict began.
In a statement released Tuesday, the ministry also confirmed that 917 teachers and administrators were killed and 4,347 injured, with more than 196 detained in the West Bank.
The attacks have severely damaged educational infrastructure, with 443 government-run schools, universities, and related buildings in Gaza and 91 UNRWA-affiliated schools either bombed or vandalized. In the West Bank, 152 schools and 8 universities have reportedly been raided and vandalized.
The statement also noted that six UNRWA schools in Jerusalem have been shut down since May 8, further disrupting access to education for Palestinian children.
The ministry has described the situation as a catastrophic blow to the education system, calling for urgent international attention and accountability.
