Kathmandu: Nepal’s dream of clinching the SAFF U-20 Women's Championship title was shattered as defending champions Bangladesh secured a commanding 4-0 victory in the final match, with striker Sagorika scoring all four goals.
The highly anticipated showdown, played in Dhaka, ended in disappointment for Nepal, who were once again forced to settle for runner-up honors. Bangladesh, meanwhile, lifted the title for the second consecutive time, completing the tournament unbeaten with six straight wins and 18 points.
Sagorika's Stunning Solo Show
The match was dominated by Sagorika, who proved unstoppable on the field. She opened the scoring early in the 8th minute, taking advantage of Nepali goalkeeper Sujata Tamang’s advanced position to slot the ball into an open net.
Sagorika returned even stronger in the second half, netting goals in the 51st, 58th, and 77th minutes, completing her hat-trick and sealing the 4-0 win. Her performance single-handedly dismantled Nepal’s defense, which had looked solid throughout the tournament.
Nepal Struggles Under Pressure
Nepal entered the match under immense pressure, needing a win to match Bangladesh in points and claim the title based on goal difference. However, the team appeared overwhelmed, particularly after conceding early. Despite a strong tournament run, Nepal’s defense faltered at the crucial moment.
Their previous encounter with Bangladesh had also ended in defeat, with a 3-2 scoreline, and history repeated itself — this time with a heavier margin.
The absence of key defender Simran Rai, who had received a red card earlier in the tournament, was sorely felt. Although Sagorika had also served a suspension, her return proved decisive as she dominated the final and emerged as the undisputed star of the championship.
Tournament Overview
Nepal finished second in the standings with 12 points, winning four matches and losing two — both to Bangladesh. Nepal had previously displayed strong form, defeating:
-Bhutan: 6-1 and 8-0
-Sri Lanka: 7-0 in both fixtures
However, the two losses to Bangladesh ultimately denied them the title.
Bangladesh's clean sweep in the tournament once again highlighted their growing dominance in South Asian women's football. For Nepal, the result is a reminder of how close — yet how far — they remain from regional glory.
