Kathmandu: Nepali football has entered one of the darkest chapters in its history after FIFA, world football's governing body, suspended the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) with immediate effect. The unprecedented decision has left the future of Nepali football uncertain and marks the first FIFA suspension of ANFA in more than five decades.

The suspension follows FIFA's conclusion that there had been third-party interference in the affairs of Nepal's football governing body, violating its statutes. The move has triggered widespread concern across the country's sporting community.

Dispute Between ANFA and Government Led to Crisis
According to sports journalist and analyst Navin Aryal, the crisis is rooted in ANFA's long-standing governance issues, including poor financial management, failure to organize domestic competitions consistently, and the inability to pay even volunteers involved in football operations.

The situation worsened after a prolonged dispute between ANFA and the National Sports Council (NSC) over the football association's election process. While FIFA repeatedly insisted that ANFA should be allowed to function independently, the government's continued intervention ultimately resulted in the suspension.

Aryal argued that FIFA recognizes only football associations elected under its statutes and does not tolerate external interference, regardless of domestic political disagreements.

Suspension Carries Serious Consequences
The suspension will have immediate and far-reaching consequences for Nepali football.
National teams across all age groups, as well as Nepali clubs, will be barred from participating in FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competitions. FIFA-accredited Nepali referees will also be unable to officiate in international matches.

In addition, FIFA's financial assistance, technical development programs, and football development grants to Nepal will be suspended until the ban is lifted.

FIFA has made it clear that the suspension will remain in place until the required reforms are completed and third-party interference is fully eliminated.

NSC Blames ANFA
NSC Member Secretary Ramcharitra Mehta described the suspension as unfortunate but blamed ANFA for creating the situation by failing to comply with national laws and the legal directives issued by the Sports Council.

He said the government would begin discussions with FIFA immediately to seek the lifting of the suspension. Mehta also indicated that if necessary, the government could consider forming an ad hoc committee to keep domestic football activities running while awaiting FIFA's decision.

ANFA Accuses Government of Ignoring FIFA
ANFA, however, has rejected the government's claims and instead accused the NSC of ignoring repeated warnings from FIFA.

ANFA spokesperson Suresh Sah said FIFA had consistently instructed the government to allow the football association to operate independently, but those instructions were disregarded. He also criticized the government's decision to prevent ANFA officials from traveling to the FIFA Congress and the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup.

According to Sah, the government's continued interference ultimately led FIFA to impose the suspension.

Football Community Faces Uncertain Future
The suspension has cast a shadow over Nepali football at a time when the FIFA World Cup is underway in North America.

Players, coaches, referees, clubs, and football supporters now face an uncertain future as Nepal is effectively isolated from international football until FIFA's conditions are met.

Both the government and ANFA have acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, but with blame being exchanged between the two sides, restoring Nepal's standing in international football will require cooperation, governance reforms, and compliance with FIFA's regulations.
