Kathmandu: Defending champions Argentina national football team have booked their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with one group-stage match remaining after defeating Austria national football team 2–0 in a Group J encounter at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
Argentina recorded their second consecutive victory of the tournament and moved to the top of the group with six points from two matches, putting them in a strong position to finish as group winners.
Messi Leads the Way Again
Captain Lionel Messi once again proved decisive for Argentina. The Argentine star missed a penalty in the 39th minute but responded moments later with a superb strike from outside the penalty area to give his side the lead before halftime.
Argentina dominated possession throughout much of the contest, controlling the tempo and limiting Austria's attacking opportunities.
Historic Record for Messi
The match also marked a historic milestone for Messi. His two goals took his World Cup tally to 18, allowing him to surpass Miroslav Klose and become the highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
The achievement adds another chapter to Messi's remarkable international career and further strengthens his legacy as one of football's greatest players.
Argentina Strong at Both Ends
Austria attempted to increase the pressure in the second half but struggled to break down Argentina's disciplined defensive structure.
Messi sealed the victory with his second goal in stoppage time, ensuring a comfortable 2–0 win. He has now scored five goals in the tournament, accounting for all of Argentina's goals so far.
Argentina's defense has also been impressive, having yet to concede a goal in the competition.
Title Defence Gathering Momentum
With two victories, a perfect defensive record, and Messi in outstanding form, Argentina have emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the World Cup title. Their combination of attacking quality, defensive solidity, and experience has made an early statement as they continue their quest to retain the trophy won in 2022.
