Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has emphasized that holding periodic elections on time is non-negotiable in Nepal. Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Sunday, Thapa said that while many South Asian countries fail to conduct elections on schedule, Nepal has maintained a strong democratic process.
Warning Over Election Bill Amendments
Thapa expressed concern that the government might alter key provisions included by the Election Commission in the proposed bill to amend and unify election-related laws.
“When the bill comes from the government, some of the provisions introduced now may be removed, and we must remain vigilant,” he cautioned. However, he noted that parliament has the authority to reintroduce such provisions during deliberation.
Party Members Should Choose Candidates
The Nepali Congress leader said it is important for local party members to have the right to select their candidates for elections. This, he argued, strengthens internal democracy within political parties.
Call for Stronger Voter Education
Thapa also highlighted the urgent need to expand voter education programs to enhance citizens’ understanding of the electoral process and ensure informed participation in elections.
