Kathmandu: The first Khagras (full) lunar eclipse of the year was observed on Sunday night coinciding with Bhadra Shukla Purnima, according to the 'Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti'.

The eclipse began at 10:11 pm and ended at 1:41 am, lasting for a total of three and a half hours in Kathmandu.

Explaining the phenomenon, committee chairman Prof. Shambhu Prasad Dhakal said a Khagras lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth completely blocks sunlight, casting its full shadow on the Moon.

The Samiti also announced that a Khandgras (partial) lunar eclipse will take place on Falgun Shukla Purnima later this year.
