Kathmandu: The centuries-old Rato Machhindranath Jatra, regarded as Nepal’s longest-running cultural and religious festival, is set to conclude on Saturday with the traditional Bhoto Jatra ceremony at Jawalakhel, Lalitpur.

According to Santosh Khadka, Ward Chairperson of Lalitpur Metropolitan City-4, preparations for the ceremonial display of the sacred vest (Bhoto) at Lalit Mandap in Jawalakhel have been completed. As in previous years, the event will be held in the presence of the Head of State, distinguished guests, devotees, and the general public.

Ancient Chariot Festival Reaches Final Stage
The festival began on Baisakh Shukla Pratipada with the installation of the idol of Rato Machhindranath on a 32-foot-high chariot. The chariot was then pulled through various parts of Lalitpur, including Pulchowk, Mangalbazar, Sundhara, Lagankhel, Kumaripati, and finally Jawalakhel.

Following centuries-old tradition, the Bhoto Jatra ceremony is held on the fourth day after the chariot reaches Jawalakhel, marking the official conclusion of the festival.

Symbol of Rain, Prosperity and Cultural Heritage
Rato Machhindranath is worshipped as the deity of rain, harvest, and prosperity. The festival is considered one of Nepal’s most significant cultural and religious traditions and is recognized as a unique symbol of the country’s living heritage.

During the monarchy, the king traditionally attended the Bhoto Jatra ceremony. Since Nepal became a republic, the President has assumed that ceremonial role.

Idol to Return to Bungmati After Festival
Immediately after the Bhoto Jatra, the idol of Rato Machhindranath will be placed on a traditional artistic khat (palanquin) and carried with musical processions from Jawalakhel to Machhindrabahal in Bungmati, where it will be reinstalled according to long-standing custom.

Ward Chairperson Khadka said this year's festival has been conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner. He urged devotees and visitors attending the ceremony to cooperate with security personnel and event organizers.

Authorities have also requested the public not to conduct trade or set up stalls on sidewalks around the Jawalakhel area to ensure smooth management of the festival and the safety of participants.
