Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said there is no need to continue the current coalition government with the CPN-UML, following Monday’s violent crackdown on the Gen-G protest.
Coalition in Question
Thapa said the coalition government, formed by the country’s two major parties with the promise of good governance, has failed to deliver. “Since the government formed by the two major parties to guarantee good governance to the people has not been able to do that, there is no need for this coalition government to continue. The Nepali Congress should reconsider this issue,” he said in a statement Monday night.
Demand for Accountability
He further insisted that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli must take full responsibility for the government’s actions. Thapa revealed that he had also voiced this position during Monday’s meeting of the Nepali Congress office bearers.
Condemnation of Government’s Actions
Terming the police crackdown on demonstrators “condemnable and inexcusable,” Thapa criticized the government’s handling of the protest. “The unwanted and violent activities that took place in the peaceful movement of the young generation (Gen-G) today are sad and unnatural. The extreme repression carried out by the government in the name of controlling the movement is condemnable and inexcusable. This style of government cannot be justified from any angle,” he stated.
