Kathmandu: Ganesh Nepali, a 25-year-old resident of Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu, has died while undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital after sustaining critical injuries in an attempted self-immolation.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dilip Ghimire of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, Nepali's condition continued to deteriorate despite receiving intensive medical care. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Earlier, Bir Hospital had informed through a press briefing that Nepali's condition was extremely critical and unstable, warning that serious complications could arise at any time. Doctors had said it was impossible to predict his recovery due to the severity of his injuries.
Medical officials said more than 55 percent of his body had suffered burns, with severe damage to his face and respiratory tract, making treatment particularly challenging. He had been placed on a ventilator in the hospital's Burn Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
A 21-member multidisciplinary medical team, led by Dr. Piyush Dahal, coordinator of the Plastic Surgery Department, was assigned to his treatment. The team included plastic surgeons, critical care specialists, anesthesiologists, senior consultants, and nursing staff working around the clock to save his life.
Hospital authorities had also considered transferring Nepali to New Delhi for advanced treatment. However, the plan could not be carried out because his condition was too unstable for air evacuation.
Despite extensive medical efforts, Nepali ultimately succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Bir Hospital.
