Meteorology Department Warns of Flash Flood Risk in Small Rivers Across Nepal for Next Three Days
Flash Flood Alert Issued for Dozens of Districts

Kathmandu: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a three-day alert, warning of a high risk of flash floods in small rivers and streams across several parts of Nepal due to ongoing monsoon activity.
According to the department, districts at risk include Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Saptari, Sunsari, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Makwanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West, Palpa, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Syangja, Kailali and surrounding areas.
Kathmandu Valley Among High-Risk Areas
Flood expert Vinod Parajuli from the department said that Kathmandu Valley, including Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Kavrepalanchok, faces a significant risk of flash flooding over the coming days. Residents living near rivers, streams and flood-prone areas have been urged to remain alert.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast Across Several Provinces
The department forecasts moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning across most Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces this afternoon. Similar weather conditions are expected in parts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, with moderate snowfall possible in higher elevations.
Widespread rain is also likely across the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, while Madhes, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to receive scattered rainfall with thunderstorms.
Possibility of Heavy to Very Heavy Rain
Meteorologists have warned of heavy rainfall in several hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as isolated areas of the Terai in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Parts of Madhes Province and the hilly and Himalayan regions of Lumbini may also experience intense downpours.
During the night, rainfall is expected to continue across much of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, with moderate precipitation forecast in Gandaki and scattered rain in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
The department has urged the public, particularly those living near rivers, streams, flood-prone settlements and landslide-risk areas, to remain cautious over the next three days. Authorities have advised residents to closely monitor official weather updates and follow safety instructions issued by local administrations as monsoon conditions remain active across much of the country.
