Kathmandu: The Ministry of Finance has issued a directive to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to initiate the clearance of dues associated with electricity tariffs for street lamps from the respective local levels. This directive aligns with the Ministry's decision on November 8, emphasizing the need for the NEA to settle outstanding dues directly with the offices concerned, with a particular focus on streetlamp-related charges.

As of mid-July, the dues from 331 local levels for street lamps totaled Rs 6.8 billion, with a significant portion accruing after the fiscal year 2074 BS. The NEA had previously proposed reconciling the unpaid tariffs through its third financial restructuring plan, suggesting the inclusion of these dues in the government's account. However, the Finance Ministry rejected this proposal and instead instructed the NEA to pursue direct collection from the respective local offices.

NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising stated, "We have proceeded with the clearance of dues accordingly." On October 8, the NEA issued a public notice, urging the payment of dues for street lamps within the next 45 days. Subsequently, on November 22, another public notice was issued, calling on local governments to fulfill their payment obligations.

This move aims to streamline and expedite the settlement of outstanding electricity dues, particularly those related to street lamps, contributing to improved financial stability in the energy sector.
