Kathmandu: On the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, leaders in Nepal have emphasized the significance of upholding human rights for the consolidation of the parliamentary democratic governance system.
President Ramchandra Paudel conveyed his best wishes on Human Rights Day, highlighting the crucial role human rights play in ensuring a reliable rule of law. He stressed that the parliamentary democratic governance system based on pluralism would only be strengthened when human rights are respected, protected, and promoted, with no citizens deprived of these fundamental rights.
Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav acknowledged the continuous challenges faced by promises, pledges, and commitments outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He emphasized the need to respect the values and rights contained in the Declaration as a collective guideline for work. Yadav urged all citizens to unite in ending various forms of chaos, disagreements, distortions, and anomalies.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' reiterated the government's commitment to fulfilling international human rights treaties and conventions ratified by Nepal. He highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure human rights by enacting laws aligned with the fundamental rights in the constitution, addressing causes of ethnic, regional, gender, and traditional discriminations. Prachanda expressed the government's dedication to developing a culture of human rights while respecting and protecting the life, dignity, equality, and freedom of each person.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire underscored the parliament's partnership and coordination with the National Human Rights Commission, constitutional bodies, and civil society for the protection and promotion of human rights. Ghimire mentioned ongoing efforts to draft and amend laws through a human rights perspective.
As Nepal observes Human Rights Day, leaders across the country have emphasized the need for collective action and commitment to ensure the principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
