Kathmandu: Plans are in motion to enhance security measures in order to facilitate the operation of Thamel and Durbarmarg areas around the clock.
A meeting convened at the District Administration Office Kathmandu today brought together concerned agencies and business stakeholders to discuss the logistics of extending the operational hours of Thamel and Durbarmarg to 24 hours. The initiative follows instructions from Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to implement round-the-clock operations in these areas.
The District Security Committee presented a security plan aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and businesses during extended hours of operation.
Addressing the gathering, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Jitendra Basnet, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, with plans to be adjusted based on feedback and challenges encountered upon implementation. He proposed the formation of a market management committee comprising business stakeholders and local residents to oversee operations, suggesting that pricing should remain consistent throughout the day and night.
CDO Basnet underscored the importance of bolstering security measures to address potential increases in criminal activity.
During the meeting, Bhabiswar Sharma, Chairperson of Thamel Tourism Development Council, expressed longstanding support for extending Thamel's operating hours to 24/7.
Similarly, Sanjay Adhikari, Treasurer of Durbarmarg Development Board, endorsed the idea of 24-hour operations for Durbarmarg, citing its suitability from all perspectives.
