Kathmandu: The Kathmandu police have taken into custody Shamsher Miya, Chairperson of the Nepal Haj Committee, in relation to the fraudulent Bhutanese refugee scheme. Miya was arrested at Singha Durbar this afternoon after his alleged participation in a scam that sent Nepali individuals to the United States by impersonating Bhutanese refugees. This revelation was made by Senior Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Karki, the chief of the District Police Range, Kathmandu.

The investigation uncovered that Miya had provided a vehicle belonging to the Haj Committee to aid the criminal group involved in the racket, according to Karki. The police discovered that a Nissan jeep (bearing the distinctive registration number BAB-1405) associated with the scam was being utilized. Consequently, the police have taken possession of the vehicle.

Law enforcement authorities claim that the racket members used the aforementioned jeep to travel to various locations across the country, such as Sauraha in Chitwan district and Sundhara in Kathmandu, under the guise of conducting interviews with clients aspiring to migrate to the US. The police allege that these interviews were a mere pretense to deceive and manipulate individuals seeking opportunities in the United States.

The ownership of the jeep, registered with the Haj Committee, is under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Miya had reportedly been evading authorities since the commencement of the police investigation.
