Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the government must be willing to take calculated risks to uplift the national economy, urging for stronger trust-building measures with the private sector.

Speaking at the 'Ncell Bahrakhari Golf and Economic Symposium' organized by Bahrakhari Media Pvt. Ltd. in Kathmandu today, Thapa stated that the economy can only improve if the government works to restore investor confidence through credible reforms.

The former minister and sitting federal lawmaker underscored the importance of open and transparent discussions in all sectors to find effective and lasting solutions to the country’s economic challenges.

He acknowledged that while the government has made efforts to implement important reforms, those initiatives must be backed by public and private trust. “Only then can meaningful change take place,” he remarked.

Thapa also called for increased focus on infrastructure, IT, software, and programming sectors, noting that the government should actively support and facilitate domestic innovation and entrepreneurship.

He further emphasized that reforms in the tax system must be developed through policy-level discussions with relevant stakeholders, ensuring the system becomes more efficient and business-friendly.

On the matter of central bank leadership, Thapa advocated for appointing the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank based on merit, insisting that the position should be given to a qualified and competent economist.
