Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has acknowledged a growing sense of tension, dissatisfaction, and confusion within the party, even as it holds power at every level of government. Speaking at the launch of the biography Sandaju, based on B.P. Koirala and authored by Subash Ghimire, Thapa called on the party’s newer generation to seize the moment of opportunity.
“There is tension, complaints, dissatisfaction, and confusion inside the Nepali Congress,” said Thapa. “But at the same time, there is also an opportunity.”
Thapa pointed out the apparent paradox: despite the Congress party currently being in power at the federal, provincial, and local levels—with the current and likely next Prime Minister coming from Congress—there remains a lack of satisfaction and unity within the party.
“Now everything is ours. The government, the provinces, the municipalities, even the governors are ours. So why is the party still unhappy?” he asked. “That is not what we are looking for.”
He stressed that the party must now go beyond electoral and bureaucratic concerns, focusing instead on ideological clarity, leadership renewal, and public connection.
Calling the Nepali Congress a true national force, Thapa noted that both within the party and broader society, there is ongoing infighting and disillusionment. He urged the party to take responsibility, saying the Congress has “no room left to complain or retreat.”
Thapa’s comments come at a time of internal friction in the Nepali Congress, with rising questions about leadership direction, generational change, and governance performance, despite its dominant political position.
