Kathmandu: The festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated across Nepal today with devotion and enthusiasm. Devotees are worshipping Lord Krishna, who is regarded as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the founder of Gyan Yoga, Karma Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. The occasion marks the birth of Lord Krishna on Bhadra Krishna Ashtami during the Dwapara Yuga.
On this day, devotees observe fasting, chant prayers, and remain awake throughout the night in remembrance of Krishna’s birth, a night revered as “Moharatri.”
Significance of Krishna’s Teachings
Lord Krishna is believed to have incarnated to protect humanity from injustice, tyranny, and demonic forces. Throughout his life, he emphasized righteousness and good deeds. The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, delivered by Krishna to Arjuna during the Kurukshetra war, remains one of the most translated and studied spiritual texts in the world.
Mythological scriptures recount Krishna’s miraculous childhood and his defeat of demons such as Kansa, Jarasandha, and Shishupal.
Major Celebrations in Kathmandu Valley
The main celebrations are taking place at the famous Krishna Mandir in Patan’s Mangalbazar, where a grand fair has been organized. Large gatherings are also reported at Navatan Dham in Kageshwori Manohara Municipality and the ISKCON temple in Budhanilkantha.
Additionally, various Krishna temples across the capital are witnessing heavy footfall. Religious organizations have organized processions and chariot parades, featuring tableaux depicting scenes from Lord Krishna’s life.
