Kathmandu: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has resigned following the killing of 19 people during the government’s crackdown on the Gen-G movement on Monday. He stepped down from his post on moral grounds, a move that comes amid mounting outrage over police indiscriminately opening fire on protesters.
Resignation Announced After NC Meeting
Earlier in the day, Minister Lekhak had informed a Nepali Congress (NC) meeting of office bearers and former office bearers that he would resign, taking responsibility for the bloodshed. Following the meeting at NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha, Lekhak proceeded to Baluwatar, where he formally submitted his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
Unprecedented Tragedy in Nepal’s Politics
This marks the first incident in Nepal’s political history where such a large number of people—19 in a single day—lost their lives in a protest crackdown. Officials fear the death toll may rise further, as many of the injured remain in critical condition.
