Kathmandu: The 28th memorial day of Ganeshman Singh, the supreme commander of Nepal’s democratic movement, is being observed today with various programs across the country.

Ganeshman Singh, born on Kartik 24, 1972 BS and passing away on Asoj 2, 2054 BS, is revered as a symbol of sacrifice and courage in Nepali politics.

A Life of Sacrifice and Dedication
Singh’s political life is remembered as a shining example of selflessness. After the success of the Jana Andolan of 2046 BS, when King Birendra offered him the post of Prime Minister, Singh declined and instead proposed his fellow leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai for the position — setting a rare precedent of political sacrifice.

Key Role in Democratic Movements
As a member of the Praja Parishad in 1997 BS, Singh played an active role in the campaign to overthrow the Rana regime. After escaping prison and reaching India, he developed close political ties with BP Koirala and made crucial contributions to the formation and growth of the Nepali National Congress.

Singh also led the armed struggle in the Birgunj Front during the 2007 BS revolution and spent eight years in prison after democracy was overthrown in 2017 BS. As the supreme leader of the Congress after BP Koirala’s death, he spearheaded the Satyagraha movement of 2042 BS and was instrumental in launching the People’s Movement of 2046 BS in collaboration with communist parties.

Programs to Mark the Day
On the occasion, fraternal and well-wishing organizations of the Nepali Congress have organized programs across the country. A wreath-laying ceremony was held at Singh’s statue at Shobha Bhagwati to honor his legacy.
