Kathmandu: Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that the party is fully prepared for elections, but if the government fails to demonstrate seriousness about conducting free and credible polls, the restoration of parliament could become an alternative.
Congress Demands Action Against Violence
Briefing the media after a meeting of the party’s office bearers on Thursday, Dr. Mahat said the meeting discussed identifying and prosecuting those responsible for opening fire during the Gen-G movement.
He added that the Congress believes those involved in arson and destruction of private and public property during the Bhadra 24 unrest must be brought to justice.
“The party’s serious attention has been drawn to incidents such as the burning of leaders’ houses, the attack on Kisunji’s ashram, and attempts to undermine democratic values and norms,” Mahat said.
Warning Against Anarchy and Capital Flight
Dr. Mahat criticized the Ministry of Home Affairs for allegedly encouraging anarchy through its statements, warning that inaction against lawlessness could increase the risk of capital flight from the country.
He said the Congress is holding internal discussions on how to address the current political challenges and determine the party’s strategic direction in the present context.
Meeting to Continue on Friday
The meeting of the central office bearers—chaired by Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka—will continue on Friday at 1 p.m., as Thursday’s session ended before all members had presented their views.
Dr. Mahat added that the meeting also discussed holding the party’s regular general convention on schedule, and explored whether the legal and organizational processes could be completed within Mangsir.
