Ganeshman Singh’s 111th Birth Anniversary Celebrated in Kathmandu

Leader remembered for his courage, sacrifice, and role in restoring democracy

Kathmandu: The 111th birth anniversary of Ganeshman Singh, the supreme commander of the 2046 BS People’s Movement and a symbol of sacrifice and courage in Nepali politics, is being marked today with various programs across the country. Different events are being organized by the Nepali Congress and its sister organizations to honor his lasting contributions to democracy.

Early Life and Political Involvement

Born on 24 Kartik 1972 BS in Kshetrapati, Kathmandu, Ganeshman Singh came from a noble family. From a young age, he became active in politics and joined the Praja Parishad, the first political party in Nepal, formed in 1997 BS to end the Rana regime. Singh and his colleagues were arrested for their involvement in the anti-Rana movement. However, he managed to escape from Bhadragol Jail before 2007 BS and fled to India.

In India, he developed close ties with BP Koirala and played a key role in organizing the Nepali National Congress,

established in 2003 BS, providing strong leadership to the democratic movement.

Role in the Democratic Revolution

Ganeshman Singh was a leading figure in the 2007 BS revolution that ended the Rana rule and established democracy in Nepal. He also led an armed struggle in the Birgunj Front. A dedicated supporter of BP Koirala, Singh remained active in promoting the ideals of the Nepali Congress.

After the first general election in 2015 BS, he became a senior minister in the government. When democracy was overthrown in 2017 BS, Singh was imprisoned for eight years in Singha Durbar and later in Sundarijal Prison.

Sacrifice and Leadership in the 2046 Movement

After returning from exile in 2033 BS with BP Koirala under the policy of national unity and reconciliation, Singh continued his struggle for democracy. His greatest contribution came during the 2046 BS People’s Movement, where he led as the supreme commander.

Despite his leadership role, Singh showed great humility and sacrifice by proposing his fellow leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai to become the Prime Minister after the movement’s success, as per the suggestion of King Birendra.

Ganeshman Singh, who passed away on 2 Asoj 2054 BS, remains an inspiration in Nepali politics. Known for his honesty, courage, and unwavering commitment to democracy, he is remembered as a true patriot and a symbol of selfless leadership.

Today, as Nepal celebrates his birth anniversary, citizens and leaders alike pay tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the nation’s freedom and democratic values.
