Women Outnumber Men in Proportional Representation Candidate List

Kathmandu: Women candidates outnumber men in the final closed list submitted by political parties for the proportional representation election to the House of Representatives.
According to details published by the Election Commission, there are 1,772 female candidates compared to 1,363 male candidates in the proportional system this time. A total of 3,135 candidates from across the country are contesting under this system, with 63 political parties participating using 57 election symbols.
The Commission stated that the final list has been published in line with the House of Representatives Election Act and Regulations. Parties have given greater priority to women candidates in compliance with constitutional provisions and the principle of inclusion, indicating stronger female representation in the upcoming parliament.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has removed the names of 76 candidates from the closed list due to legal and technical reasons. Among them, 21 were blacklisted by the Credit Information Center, 25 were disqualified for being listed under the Provincial Assembly proportional system, and 10 were removed for failing to pay the prescribed fine. An additional 10 names were withdrawn at the request of the respective parties.
The Commission said the strict screening reflects its commitment to ensuring fairness, transparency, and legal compliance in the election process.
