Kathmandu: Formal campaigning for the House of Representatives elections has begun from today, with political parties and candidates permitted to conduct election activities within the legally defined 15-day window before polling day.

According to the Election Commission’s provision, rallies, public meetings, corner assemblies, and the publication or broadcast of election-related materials in the media are allowed only during this period. Campaigning can continue until midnight on Falgun 18.

The Commission has urged parties, candidates and stakeholders to strictly comply with the election code of conduct, emphasizing that maintaining the integrity of the election process must remain a top priority. Candidates are now formally allowed to seek votes from voters under the set guidelines.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that the Commission has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward violations of the code of conduct. Offenders may be asked for clarification and could face warnings, fines, or even cancellation of candidacy based on the severity of the violation.

The Commission has mobilized various mechanisms to monitor compliance and has reminded stakeholders that the code of conduct was formulated after extensive consultations with political parties, all of which have pledged to follow it.

Political parties and candidates are permitted to advertise in newspapers, magazines and online media as per prescribed standards. Expenses incurred for organizing public meetings and campaign events must be reported to the concerned election office by the candidate or their representative.

The Commission has also prohibited the spread of false information, propaganda, and hate speech through social and online media aimed at influencing the election unfairly or targeting any party or candidate.
