Kathmandu: The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has intensified action against illegal trading and black marketing of cooking LPG gas amid supply concerns.
Public Asked to Report Irregularities
The department has urged consumers to report any incidents of hoarding, overpricing, or unfair practices by calling the hotline 1137, assuring that the identity of informants will remain confidential. It warned that strict action, including on-the-spot fines under the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS, will be taken against violators.
Monitoring Intensified Despite Supply Measures
Although the Nepal Oil Corporation has introduced measures such as selling half cylinders to manage supply, the department has stepped up monitoring following continued shortages in the market.
Rs 300,000 Fine on Gas Industry
In a recent action, the department fined Shreeram Gas Industries Rs 300,000 after discovering a large stock of hidden gas cylinders in a warehouse in Harisiddhi, Lalitpur.
A monitoring team found 6,377 cylinders (14.2 kg each) stored, indicating an artificial shortage created despite high market demand.
Warning to Businesses
The department has warned all gas producers and distributors to conduct business legally and responsibly, especially during times of crisis. It stated that inspections and monitoring activities have been further strengthened nationwide to ensure smooth supply and prevent artificial shortages.
