Kathmandu: The main opposition party, the Nepali Congress, has stressed the need for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incidents that took place on Bhadra 23 and 24 during the ‘Gen-G’ movement.
Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Congress leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe expressed serious dissatisfaction, stating that the investigation conducted so far has not been fair or balanced.
He accused the government-formed inquiry commission of effectively granting immunity to those responsible for setting fire to the Parliament building and Singha Durbar. He emphasized that both the alleged police repression on Bhadra 23 and the destruction and vandalism on Bhadra 24 must be investigated equally.
Angdembe said it is wrong to look at the incidents from a one-sided perspective—where some focus only on police actions on Bhadra 23 while others focus only on the destruction that occurred on Bhadra 24.
He further questioned the credibility of the inquiry commission, noting that while it recommended action regarding the Bhadra 23 incident, it claimed there was “not enough time” to investigate the events of Bhadra 24. He described this reasoning as suspicious and intentional, especially since the commission had been granted multiple extensions.
Drawing the attention of the government, Angdembe urged the Prime Minister to immediately make the commission’s report public. He called on the government to act responsibly and transparently within legal procedures rather than allowing information to emerge informally.
He also reminded the House that the current session is being held in a temporary structure, as the original Parliament building was reduced to ashes on Bhadra 24. He called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
Reaffirming his party’s position, Angdembe stated that “no guilty person should escape, and no innocent person should be punished.”
He also emphasized the need to end political instability and create an environment where the current government can function effectively for a full five-year term. He concluded by stating that the Nepali Congress remains committed to seeking legal and political solutions to prevent such destructive incidents in the future.
