Kathmandu: Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Nepal has created a favorable environment for uniting party leaders and cadres and moving forward together to strengthen the Nepali Congress.
Court Verdict Ends Internal Dispute
The Supreme Court upheld the earlier decision of the Election Commission Nepal, granting legal recognition to the Thapa-led leadership. With this ruling, a three-month-long internal dispute within the party has been formally resolved.
The dispute had originated after the special general convention held in Poush elected Thapa as party president. The faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba had challenged the legitimacy of that convention, first at the Election Commission and later in the Supreme Court. The court’s final verdict has now settled the matter.
“Not Victory or Defeat, but Democratic Practice”
Reacting to the verdict, Thapa emphasized that the decision should not be seen as a win or loss for any faction, but rather as a reinforcement of democratic norms and procedures.
“The decision of the Supreme Court has united party members and created an environment to move forward together. This is not a matter of victory or defeat, but of method, process, and democratic practice,” he stated on social media.
Call for Unity and Responsibility
Thapa called on all party leaders, cadres, and supporters—both within Nepal and abroad—to contribute responsibly to party unity and revival. He expressed confidence that members across different levels would play a positive role in strengthening the organization.
“As party president, I am clear that the biggest responsibility lies with me, and I will actively fulfill it,” he added.
Focus on 15th General Convention
Thapa also highlighted that preparations for the party’s 15th General Convention are already underway. He urged party members to make the convention a success and use it as an opportunity for transformation and organizational strengthening.
He stressed the need to build a party that reflects the aspirations of the new generation while respecting the contributions of senior leaders.
Political Impact Ahead
Although the legal dispute has now been resolved, its political impact is expected to continue in the coming days. The party had experienced parallel activities from both factions, especially after electoral setbacks and leadership disagreements.
With the Supreme Court’s ruling, the focus now shifts toward unity, organizational reform, and rebuilding public trust as the Nepali Congress moves forward under Thapa’s leadership.
