Kathmandu: Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed concern over what he described as a growing narrative in society that portrays “anything old as bad” while glorifying everything new.

Speaking at the launch of the book “Daman Pakhrin, the Leader of the Khaniyabas Rebellion” in Kathmandu on Saturday, Thapa said that although the idea that “the old is outdated and the new is better” may seem simple and appealing, it is ultimately dangerous. He warned that if society fully embraces this mindset, it risks losing its traditions, history, and the valuable experience carried by older generations.

According to him, disrupting the balance between the old and the new could lead to injustice toward history and leave the future without proper direction.

Addressing internal party matters, Thapa acknowledged that from an external perspective, it may appear that the Nepali Congress has been largely occupied with resolving internal disputes. However, he emphasized that the party’s primary focus at present should be fulfilling its responsibilities toward the nation.

He also highlighted the importance of the opposition’s role in a लोकतांत्रिक system, stating that safeguarding democracy is not solely the responsibility of the government. The opposition, he said, has an equally crucial duty. Thapa cautioned that even a slight failure by the opposition to perform its role responsibly could put democracy itself at risk, urging the Congress to move forward with greater accountability.
