Kathmandu: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, commonly known as 'Prachanda,' has expressed apprehension regarding ongoing efforts to create division within the ruling coalition. These attempts have manifested through actions taken against the government and disruptions in parliamentary proceedings.
During a meeting with senior representatives from major media outlets on Tuesday, Prime Minister Prachanda acknowledged these developments, stating, "I have recently become aware of these concerns. However, I firmly believe that there is no disunity within the coalition. The government continues to function."
He further pointed out that recent activities seem aimed at destabilizing the coalition and eroding trust in the government. Despite these challenges, Prime Minister Prachanda reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining effective governance and enhancing public service delivery.
Amid these concerns, Prime Minister Prachanda emphasized that his administration remains steadfast in fulfilling its responsibilities, prioritizing good governance, and advancing the well-being of the people. However, his statements have sparked speculation about the underlying dynamics within the coalition.
Reports suggest that Prime Minister Prachanda might be employing past controversies to exert pressure on his coalition partners. The reopening of the Gaur Massacre case, directly implicating Upendra Yadav, Chairman of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), has triggered tension. Yadav's party has issued a warning that it could withdraw from the coalition if the Gaur Massacre file is revisited.
Similarly, the reexamination of the Lalita Niwas land scam has implications for Madhav Nepal, given his tenure as Prime Minister during the land's sale. The renewed investigation could potentially lead to questioning Mr. Nepal. His party holds significant influence within the coalition.
Moreover, members of the Nepali Congress are under scrutiny from the government. Balkrishna Khand's detainment, linked to the Fake Bhutanese Refugee Scam, and the arrest of Dr. Sunil Sharma, a Member of Parliament and Congress leader, over alleged fake educational certificates, have sparked concerns within the Congress party regarding the government's intentions.
Prime Minister Prachanda's actions have bred skepticism among coalition partners. The opposition Nepal Communist Party (NCP) - Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) is reportedly trying to persuade coalition partners to exit the alliance and form a new coalition. Former Prime Minister KP Oli, a prominent figure in the NCP-UML, is allegedly keen on destabilizing the current coalition government due to concerns surrounding investigations into alleged corruption during his tenure.
As the political landscape evolves, the impact of these recent developments on the coalition government's stability and the broader political environment remains uncertain.
