Kathmandu: A writ petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court, questioning the academic qualifications of Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari. The petition, filed today, alleges that Governor Adhikari's academic credentials are insufficient for the responsibilities of the post. The Supreme Court's joint-spokesperson, Govinda Ghimire, confirmed that a hearing on the petition is scheduled for Friday.

Governor Adhikari was appointed by the government as the head of the Central Bank on 24th Chait, 2076 BS. According to Section 20 of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, the governor is required to hold a master's degree in economics, monetary issues, banking, finance, commerce, management, public administration, statistics, mathematics, or law, along with relevant experience.

The writ petition, filed by advocates Deepakraj Joshi, Pratapsingh Thakurathi, Damodar Timilsana, and Chudamani Bhandari, claims that while Adhikari has obtained an equivalent degree from Tribhuvan University, the law mandates the completion of a master's level program. Therefore, the petition argues that he does not meet the qualification criteria based on equivalence.
