Kathmandu: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) calling for legal recognition of cohabitation. Advocate Anu Bhattarai filed the petition on Thursday, urging the court to establish laws to regulate cohabitation due to the increasing number of such cases.

Bhattarai seeks a mandamus order from the SC to formalize cohabitation, allowing eligible individuals to practice it within a systematic framework. The petition emphasizes the need for laws to eliminate taboos surrounding cohabitation and address issues such as rape allegations and character defamation.

The petitioner advocates for legal eligibility for unmarried individuals, divorcees, widows, or separated individuals over the age of 18 to engage in cohabitation. Additionally, the petition calls for clear guidelines on the grounds and procedures for separation in cases of mutual misunderstanding, family pressure, or other personal reasons.

The SC is set to hear the case on March 17.
