Kathmandu: The Weather Forecasting Division reported record high temperatures across Nepal on Thursday, with Nepalgunj hitting an unprecedented 44.2 degrees Celsius. This marks the highest temperature ever recorded in the city, located in the western plains of Nepal.
Govinda Jha, a meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, confirmed that Nepalgunj experienced scorching heat during the afternoon. On the same day, the nearby city of Dhangadhi also saw extreme temperatures, reaching 44.1 degrees Celsius.
Last month, Bhairahawa recorded a high of 43.6 degrees Celsius, indicating a trend of rising temperatures across the region.
In addition to the western plains, other parts of Nepal also experienced intense heat. Biratnagar sweltered at 41 degrees Celsius, while Ghorai recorded a temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius.
Even the hilly regions, including the federal capital Kathmandu and the tourist hub Pokhara, faced unusually high temperatures. Pokhara recorded 34 degrees Celsius, and Kathmandu was slightly higher at 34.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
The current weather conditions in Nepal are being influenced by local and westerly winds, with some impact from a lower pressure system in the vicinity of Bihar, India.
